Additional Details:
Original painting by De Roussy Girodet, the celebrated French artist, hangs in the Louvre in Paris. Was exhibited with great effect in 1808. Scene from Chateaubrland in which young Chartas and the old hermit,d'Aubray, are burving the young Attala, who holds in her death clasp a cross to her breast. In orphanhood Girodet received care and education from the court physician,Dr. Troison, who upon his persistent refusal to study architecture or go into the army or be aught but a painter, placed him in the studio of David. After studying there for some time,he went to Italy at the time of the revolution and was found ill and cared for by Gros,a painter,at Genoa. This was the basis of a lifelong friendship, which ended only when Gros pronounced one of the oratins delivered by artists at Girodet's funeal.
