| Historical Long Island, Montauk Lighthouse: George Washington signed the bill authorizing construction in 1795. Copy of this bill is filed in the Town Clerk's Office in East Hampton. Surveys for the lighthouse site were begun in 1792. The tower was built in 1796. The original oil beacon for the Lighthouse was donated by the French Government. |
