Back:
The development of the American flag fol.
lowed a regular pattern. The 13 stripes were
evolved to represent the 13 Colonies.
There was no idea of separation from Great
Britain, so the British Jack was put in the
corner. When the Committee was appointed
to select an American flag, they naturally
took the 13 stripes, and Rhode Island already
had put the 13 stars in the jack of their flag.
It was planned to add both stars and stripes
as States were admitted, but this was found
impractical, and after the War of 1812, we
went back to the original 13 stripes but added
a star for each state.
