In this building Benedict Arnold met Major John Andre and agreed to sell his country for British gold and favor. Andre hid the papers containing plans of West Point and the American forces in his boots. While this meeting was in progress the Captain of the "Vulture," the man-of-war which had brought Andre to Haverstraw, took fright at a random shot fired below the Highlands, and, thinking the plot discovered, dropped down the river below Tarrytown, forcing Andre to cross the Hudson, and proceed by foot to Tarrytown, where he was captured. |
