Erected at a cost of approximately $1,000,
000. Concrete save for the middle span, which
is a bascule lift. The Tennessee River from this
point to Hale's Bar, 33 miles distant, is prac-
tically an inland lake. It is situated between
two mountain ranges and is called by many
w the "American Rhine." This bridge occupies
to the site of the Military Bridge constructed by
the Federals during the Civil War. The Mili
tary Bridge was washed away by high water
a few years later,
