MARKET STREET BRIDGE, CHATTANOOGA,
TENNESSEE.
Erected at a cost of approximately $1,000,000. Con-
crete save for the middle span, which is a bascule
lift. The Tennessee River from this point to Hale's
Bar, 33 miles distant, is practically an inland lake.
It is situated between two mountain ranges and is
called by many the "American Rhine.” This
bridge occupies the site of the Military Bridge con-
structed by the Federals during the Civil War. The
Military Bridge was washed away by high water a
few years later.
