The Soldiers and Sailors' Monument, situated on Training Green, was dedicated August 9th, 1869. It is built of Hallowill granite; the main base is 91/6 feet square and 2 ½ feet high, two sub-bases surmounting it; the pedestal, a block of granite weighing between 11 and 12 tons, is 3 ½ feet in height, the main column is 14 feet high, and on the top is a globe, upon which an eagle is perched. The total height of the monument is 58 feet. |
