The city square was laid out Sept. 5, 1805, by Bezaieel Wells, the founder of Canton. The first building was the Market House, now turned over to the Fire Department, The Public Square is the centre of the city, which extends 10,720 feet to the north, 10,620 feet east, 14,020 feet south, and 13,320 feet west of the Square, the latter being 120 feet wide.
