During the War Between the States, the
Confederates placed cannon on the Point of
Lookout Mountain, commanding the valley be-
low. It was here that the Battle Above the
Clouds was fought on November 24th, 1863.
The Union forces finally stormed the heights
and drove the Confederates off.
