This famous engineering feat is located on
Signal Mountain, seven miles north of Chat-
tanooga. The series of switchbacks is the only
way for the highway to gain the summit of the
mountain. The town of Signal Mountain is lo-
cated on the top, which is part of the Cumber-
land Plateau. Elevation above sea level is 2000
feet.
