is the largest city on the Mississippi river, and
one of the most enterprising cities in the United
States. It is the principal market for shoes in
the western country. The city owns its own
water works system costing about $20,000,000.
Its park system constitutes one of its most at-
tractive features, containing a total area of over
3,000 acres. An International exhibition was
held here 1904 to commemorate the centennial
of the purchase of the Louisiana territory from
France.
