Additional Details:
The Niagara River is the connecting link between Lakes Erie and Ontario. After leaving Lake Erie this great body of water moves slowly up to a short distance from the Falls, taking a running start over the smaller rapids, then plunging down over the precipice, 160 feet high, and moving on with great velocity down over the large rapids, through the Gorge until the torrent reaches the Great Whirlpool. From here a quieter course begins through the Lower Gorge. The various currents in the Whirlpool move with great rapidity and force, rendering it impossible for any boat to navigate. Every attempt so far has been disastrous. It has been impossible to ascertain the depth of this great basin washed out of the rocks
