GREAT WHIRLPOOL AND LOWER
GORGE OF NIAGARA
The Niagara River is the connecting
link between Lakes Erie and Ontario.
After leaving Lake Erie this great body
of water moves slowly up to a short dis-
tance from the Falls, taking a running
start over the smaller rapids, then plung-
ing down over the precipice, 160 feet high,
and moving on with great velocity down
over the large rapids, through the Gorge
until the torrent reaches the Great Whirl-
pool. From here a quieter course begins
through the Lower Gorge.
The various currents in the Whirlpool
move with great rapidity and force, ren-
dering it impossible for any boat to navi-
gate. Every attempt so far has been
disastrous. It has been impossible to
ascertain the depth of this great basin
washed out of the rocks.
