ALABAMA'S STATE CAPITOL in Montgomery has
been the seat of the state government for over
one hundred years. In the present House
Representatives chamber, the Ordinance of Seces-
sion was passed in 1860, and the capitol became
the official home of the Confederate government
until it was later moved to Richmond. The central
section has an enormous 97-foot dome, and on
each side of the main entrance a spiral cantilever
stairway winds to the third floor.
