KNOX HEADQUARTERS
near NEWBURGH, N. Y.
About 5 miles south-west of Newburgh, on Route
94, near Vails Gate, is this field stone house, built
about 1754. Here, General Henry Knox, Chief Artil-
lery Officer of the Continental Army and later the
first Secretary of War, had his Revolutionary Head-
quarters, 1782-1783. At times during the war, this
house by the "Silver Stream" with rustic 200 year
old stone bridge and deep woods, was also the
headquarters of Generals Gates and Greene. The
State owns this 50 acre tract of land.
