THE BLUE HILL METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATORY OF
HARVARD UNIVERSITY founded by Abbott Lawrence
Rotch in 1885. Pioneered in upper air studies by
means of clouds, kites, and balloons — most recently
with radiosondes (first American type developed here
1935). An exceptionally complete, mostly automatic
record of the weather has been kept for 65 years.
Visible at right of tower are louvred screen for ther-
mometers, radar target, dew-point recorder, and pyr-
heliometer for diffuse insolation, and at left of tower,
top, are several pyrheliometers for total insolation, and
atop the masts are various anemometers and wind vanes.
In the near wing, is the U.S. Weather Bureau's Solar
Radiation Field Testing Unit, and in the far wing
(not visible), the library, and the secretary's office of
the American Meteorological Society.
