This city, founded on 150 acres of land given by Col. Benjamin Temple in 1811, was named for Gen. Geo. Washington, Temple's Revolutionary War Commanding Officer. The words "COURT HOUSE" from the Virginia custom of naming a county seat town. Fayette County named for the Marquis de la Fayette, another of Temple's Commanders.
