ST. MICHAEL'S PROTESTANT EPISCOPAL CHURCH
CHARLESTON, S. C.
The oldest church edifice in Charleston. Cor-
nerstone was laid in 1752 and first services
held in 1761. Clock and bells imported from
England 1764. British forces took the bells to
England as a Revolutionary War prize; later re-
turned by а London merchant. Confederate
forces used the steeple as a lookout post.
Federal gunners used it as a point of aim during
bombardment of 1863 and their shells landing
in and around the church destroyed part of
this beautiful landmark, Washington, Lee, La-
Fayette and other notables have worshipped
