Built by William H. Gist. Governor of South Carolina (1858-60). Now restored to its former beauty and preserved as a State Park. Built of stuccoed brick, with gable roof, front and rear piazzas, and elliptical fanlight. The hand-forged iron strap hinges that support shutters and doors are of local workmanship. Interior spiral staircase; parlor trap door to a large cellar are among the interesting features of the mansion. Exterior slave quarters and kitchens reveal work by highly skilled craftsmen. |
