COOPER RIVER BRIDGE

Often referred to as a "Giant's Roller
Coaster". Actually this montrous structure is a
masterpiece of modern engineering. Designed by
Waddell & Hardesty of New York as a double
Cantilever bridge over two separate bodies of
water, Town Creek and the Cooper River. Con-
struction began June 1927 and completed
August 1929. Built by private capital at a cost
of over $6,000,000.00 and bought by S. C. State
Highway Dept. in 1946. Total length is over two
miles; longest span is 1,050 feet; highest part
of structure is 270 feet and the road is more
than 150 feet above the Cooper River.
