THE STATE HOUSE COLUMBIA, S. C.
Begun in 1851 the huge edifice, scarred by Sherman's
shells, is a favorite tourist attraction. Built of local
granite the uncompleted capitol of S. C. was designed
by a Viennese architect, John R. Niernsee.
