STATE CAPITOL BUILDING
Phoenix, Arizona
Constructed of Arizona tufa stone, the original
building was dedicated Feb. 25, 1901 during the
session of the 21st Territorial Legislature. The 19th
Legislature had approved a bond issue for $100,000
for construction of the capitol. This amount was
supplemented and the final cost was $135,774.29.
Built on donated grounds which were acquired in
1887, that area was known as State House Park.
The land donation was an inclusion in the agree-
ment when the Territorial Capitol was moved from
Prescott. The first addition to the building was
made in 1918, another in 1939 and finally the two
new front wings in 1960. The center addition cost
$155,000.00 and the Justice Building cost $658,441.35
with the Public Works Administration contributing
part of the cost.
