In the southern wing of the U. S. Capitol is the U. S. House of Representatives. The Ham of the House occupies the main floor. It is 139 ft. in length, 93 ft. wide and 30 ft high. The members desks are of mahogany, the Speaker's desk of white marble, elevated below which are the desks of the clerks and official reporters of the House. The visitors' galleries are entered from the floor above. A ceiling of glass panels having the Coat of Arms of each state painted upon them diffuses a soft light throughout the chamber. |
