Back:
Jackson Statue set up in 1846 at a cost of
$30,000. Henry Clay made the dedication
speech. The artist, Clark Mills, has been highly
praised for the poise of the figures, which con-
jointly weigh 20,000 pounds. The inscription
on the granite base was cut by General Butler's
orders during the Civil War. It reads: "The
Union must and shall be preserved."
