This is called the First Burial Place because Lincoln's body was kept in this vault from 1869 until 1874, or until the tomb was completed. Union soldiers were kept on guard day and night for quite some time after Lincoln's remains were placed in the vault. This was done as a mark of honor and respect for the Great Emancipator
