MONTEREY BAY, CALIFORNIA
This beautiful bay was discovered in 1542 by Juan Rod-
riguez Cabrillo. It was Sebastian Vizaino, sailing north
from Mexico, who in 1602 wrote such glowing reports of
the "noble harbor" which he promptly named in honor
of the Viceroy of New Spain, Gaspar de Zuniga, Count
of Monterey. In 1818 Hypolite Bouchard, the French pirate,
raided the town and pillaged for a week before sailing
south. Monterey was the seat of intrigue and plotting even
up to the time Commodore Sloat raised the American flag
over the Customhouse in 1846. Today Monterey is a mod-
ern town with a touch of the past. . M.P.
