Old St. George Street, so named in honor of England's Patron saint, was once the aristocratic thoroughfare of St. Augustine. At the head of the street stand the Pillars of the city gates, which, with the adjoining walls, are the chief memorials of the old city. the gateway is of coquina and is most picturesque and imposing with its lofty towers, the loopholes and sentryboxes being still preserved. The old drawbridge has been demolished and replaced by a stone causeway. |
