This low spreading cactus of flat joints, bears
no spines but tiny cushions of brownish hair-
like spicules or "stickers". The brilliant ma-
genta blossoms develop into reddish purple
fruit, commonly called 'cactus apples". This
fruit, when the stickers are removed, is cooked
with meat by the Indians, and made into B
"cactus candy" by the Mexicans.
