MULE DEER
(Odocoileus hemionus)
The mule deer gets its name from its very large ears; but
it is often called the black-tailed deer, because the tail
always has a black tip and does not show as much white as
that of the white-tailed deer. Mule deer run with a high
bounding gait, quite different from the flight of the white-
tailed deer. In the autumn deer from high in the moun-
tains move down to the foothills, where food is more easily
obtained.
