MOUNTAIN LION
(Felis concolor)
The mountain lion, cougar, or puma, is an American animal
without close relatives elsewhere. Cougars are shy, being
rarely seen even where they are common. In the West
they frequent mountainous country. Deer are their chief
prey, although most mammals, from rabbits to wapiti, are
sometimes taken by them. Human beings rarely are
attacked unless by a starving or cornered mountain lion.
