Bankhead Tunnel, named after a distin-
guished Alabama statesman, is the first en-
gineering feat of its kind in the deep South.
A four million dollar self liquidating traffic
artery under Mobile River, which reduces by
seven and one half miles the distance be-
tween the city and points north and east on
the Old Spanish Trail. Total length 3389 feet,
under river portion 1147 feet, width of road-
way 21 feet, headroom 13 feet 6 inches.
Opened to traffic Feb. 20, 1941.
