known "Bobwhite". California Quail are among the loveliest and

paral covered slopes. Here they gather in flocks-usually with one bird
staying apart to act as a lookout. Let something disturb the lookout 2 PM
and a low, shrill sound sends the whole flock scurrying away in every 1957
direction. Though they can fly easily and well they prefer to seek salety
by darting over the ground under the protection of thick brush or
chapparal.
