MUIR GLACIER For many years the Muir Glacier was made the central feature of travel in Alaska. After the earthquake disturbance in 1899 Glacier Bay was rendered inaccessible owing to the extent of the ice pack. Of late years it has been found possible at times to approach the face of the glacier, which presents an entirely different ap- pearance having receded twelve miles or more.
