East view: The cornerstone was laid in 1793 by
President Washington. Burned by the British in
1812, it was not completed until 1863. The main
part of the building is of Massachusetts marble
and Virginia sandstone, the dome is a double
shell of cast iron painted white to harmonize
Iwith the rest of the structure.
