An aerial view of Haines and Port Chilkoot, Alaska, taken
to the south. Haines, located on the upper arm of the Lynn
Canal, originally began as an Indian Trading Post. Today,
logging, fishing and tourism form a large part of the
economy. Haines is also an Eagle Preserve. The Alaska
Marine Highway System provides access to and from
Haines for traffic on the Haines cut-off to the Alaska
Highway. Port Chilkoot (in center) has been designated a
historical site, as it was the first permanent U.S. Army Post
to be established
