HAINES, located on the upper arm of the Lynn Canal,
originally began as an Indian Trading Post. Today,
logging, fishing and tourism form a large part of the
economy. Haines is also an Eagle Preserve. The Alaska
Marine Highway System provides access to and from
Haines for traffic on the Haines cut-off to the Alaska
Highway. Port Chilkoot (on left) has been designated a
historical site as it was the first permanent U.S. Army
Post to be established.
