On May 18, 1980 a magnitude 5+ earthquake triggered land-
slides that decapitated MOUNT ST. HELENS and flowed as a
great debris avalanche down the north side and 13½ miles down
the north fork Toutle Valley.
Here a helicopter, 4 miles from the dome inside the crater, sits on
600 feet of material deposited near the outlet of Spirit Lake.
