UNITED STATES SENATE
In this official photograph Senators of the 92nd
Congress are shown assembled directly after
approving the nomination of William Renquist to
the Supreme Court, December 10, 1971. The
Senate has met in this chamber since 1859. The
Vice President is the presiding officer and casts
the decisive ballot in case of a tie vote. Busts of
former Vice Presidents decorate the galleries,
where the public may witness the Senate's ac-
tivities.
