This theatre was built by Jack Swan in
1843 as a lodging house and saloon. It was
the first building in California where admis-
sion was charged (sometimes as much
$5.00 a seat) for theatrical performances. Now
owned by the state it is a historical museum
and sometimes used for revivals of early
melodramas by modern Troupers of the Gold
Coast.
