The First Presbyterian Church of Galena,
Illinois, is the oldest church building in the
Old Northwest Territory still used regularly
for services. It was built out of native lime-
stone in 1838 under the leadership of the
Rev. Aratus Kent, pioneer churchman and
educator, who founded schools and churches
all over this territory. The steeple, patterned
after the Old South Church in Boston, was
added about 1850.
