Great Mound on the banks of the Ohio. Near Grave Creek. This Mammoth Mound is the largest prehistoric Monument in America. It is 79 ft. high. 900 ft. in circumference at base. Discovered 1772. Opened in 1838 by a tunnel along the natural surface to the center and a shaft from the apex to tunnel. 2 vaults constructed of timber were revealed in which were found 3 human skeletons, and numerous ornaments of copper, iron, mica and bone, also a curiously carved stone, the Characters on which have never been deciphered. Located at moundsville, W. Va. And is now owned by the state of W. Va.
