COIT TOWER. Coit Tower was erected on Tele-
graph Hill in memory of Lillie Hitchcock from funds left
by her to beautify San
Francisco. From the top a com-
manding view of the Docks and the Bay may be had.
It also looks down on Alcatraz Island, now a Federat
prison and the far Marin Hills on the opposite side. Lillie
Coit was a San Francisco pioneer who took an active inter-
est in the city and was decorated with the Gold Star Jol 34
