Elizabeth City, N. C., located on Pasquotank
River, is one of the most historic sections of
the United States. Nearby are the Dismal
Swamp Canal surveyed by George Washington,
and Roanoke Island where in 1584 the follow
ers of Sir Walter Raleigh landed and where
in 1587 Virginia Dare, the first white child in
America, was born. Also close is Kill Devil
Hill, where the Wright Brothers experimented
with the first aeroplane and at this place the
government has erected a massive monument
in commemoration of them.
