Robert Fulton

Robert Fulton, the pioneer of steam navigation, was born in Fulton, Lancaster Co., Pa., Nov. 14th 1765. The “Clermont”, designed by him, was the first steamboat to make a successful trip. She was 133 feet long, 18 feet wide, 9 feet deep and 160 tons measurement. Fulton died in New York City on Feb. 24th, 1815, and is buried in Trinity Churchyard, where in 1901, a granite monument with a bronze medallion was erected by the American society of Mechanical engineers. |
