The "cageless" bear pits, which are reproduc-
tions of limestone bluffs along the Mississippi,
serve as a retreat for the bears and paths permit
them to scale the rocks toward the top. These
bear pits were erected at a cost of more than a
quarter of a million dollars. This particular
bear seems to convey the expression of being
proud of this fact.
