A Rich Gentleman, dying, left his little boy and girl all his money, begging their uncle to look after the. The uncle, alas, was wicked enough to want the children's money. So he engaged two robbers to take the children into a wood and kill them. The robbers set off with the children, but one of them had a kind heart and wanted to spare their lives. His companion mocked him. The robbers fought and the kind-hearted robber was killed. The other gallopped off, leaving the children alone. Hand in hand the frightened little ones wandered away in the wood, eating hungrily the blackberries that grew here and there about them. A long while they wandered, then lay down and died. And the gentle robins came and covered then with leaves. But the wicked uncle did not prosper, and himself died within a year, poor and miserable Men and children and horses |
