was
April 18, 1983,
shattered by a powerful bomb, killing at least 61 persons,
including 17 Americans, and wounding some 95 others in the
worst attack ever against an American target in Lebanon. It is
speculated that a "suicide terrorist" in a pick-up truck bear-
ing false diplomatic plates and laden with explosives
stormed the embassy causing the salmon-pink building to
collapse like an accordian. President Reagan reaffirmed that
"this criminal attack... will not deter the U.S. from doing
what we know to be right" in the search for peace in the
Middle East.
