Additional Details:
On April 18, 1983, the U. S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon was shattered by a powerful bomb, killing at least 61 persons, including 17 Americans, and wounding some 95 others in the worst attack ever against an American target in Lebanon. It is speculated that a “suicide terrorist” in a pick-up truck bearing false diplomatic plates and laden with explosives stormed the embassy causing the salmon-pink building to collapse like an accordian. President Reagan reaffirmed that “This criminal attack . . . will not deter the U. S. from doing what we know to be right” in the search for peace in the Middle East.
