President Reagan assists in lighting the Olympic flame at
the White House as games preparations go on without
Russia participating. Flown to the United States from
Greece on a government jet, the Olympic flame burned
bravely in rainy Manhattan and thence to Washington,
D.C. as it continued its 9,000 mile journey to Los Angeles.
Citizens from all walks of life and varying abilities vied to
carry the flame of freedom that evoked much emotion-
alism and patriotic ferver across the United States. May 4,
