Nancy Reagan, just like any other homemaker, under-
stands inflation. At the White House kitchen she oversees
work where chefs and staff prepare for state events. Costs
are soaring as salaries and the prices of supplies rise, even
though the Reagans pay for all the food they serve at pri-
vate parties. Running costs have risen 29 percent despite
efforts by the President and his wife to pare down costs for
the 132-room mansion. The National Parks Service, which
pays the bills, has allocated $3.8 million for the coming
year to maintain and operate the White House. April 12,
