President Reagan and Nancy make the first trip to Asia of his
presidency, as they visit Japan in a very visual, political trip to
display Reagan to Japanese voters as a world statesman,
consulted by an ally, Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro
Nakasone who faced election troubles, survived a drubbing,
then picked up the pieces to reorganize. Some Reagan
lieutenants complained about this trip, but there was a need
to demonstrate U.S. solidarity with allies that it can count on.
Reagan also hoped to prod for action on the serious trade
disputes between the U.S. and Japan, and progress was
made on these thorny issues. The Nakasones entertained
their famous visitors during lunch at the Prime Minister's
country retreat, a cottage 35 miles west of Tokyo, a sort of
Oriental Camp David. November 11, 1983
