Worried Reagan officials and the American Public were relieved to learn of aviator Lt. Robert Goodman's release. Rev. Jesse Jackson flew to Syria to negotiate freedom with Syrian leader Hafez Assad in a rare private meeting to “break the cycle of pain” between our two nations. Jackson and naval aviator flew home on an Air force VC-137 jet as goodman revealed the Syrian captors had beaten him at first and interrogated him; but, he had given vague answers. This photo shows President Reagan giving thanks to jesses Jackson and the modest young lieutenant as his wife, family, George Schultz, and Casper Weinberger look on. January 4, 1984. |
